With another major death, as well as a whole host of unbelievable twists and turns, True Blood this week served up the most compelling episode of the season so far. With Eric crying, Nora dying, Bill begging, Arlene grieving, Alcide caught lying and Jason held captive, there wasn’t a second of In The Evening that didn’t push the story forward at an incredible pace… Well, okay, the whole Royal London connection was a little Anne Rice, but given the quality of the rest of the episode, completely forgivable.
Let’s start with the systematic destruction of the alpha males of the episode by some seriously pissed off women. The vamps’ worst nightmare – aside from the true death – has just come true, and Whore for Christ Sarah is now fully in charge of their extermination. This gives her even more opportunity to spout even more rubbish about genocide in the name of the Lord and biblical irony, without considering even for a second that were this actually a biblical event, her being a woman would basically put her out of the running for everything except reproduction – gotta love that particular biblical irony. Now that she’s completely in charge, it’s not just the vamps that are in trouble; Jason - having been the second man to spurn her for some fangs – is now fully at her mercy.
And her idea of punishment? Putting him into the female vamp gen pop while bleeding freely. Has she not met Jason? Women are what he allegedly does best, and while Sarah might think she’s just dropped him in his worst nightmare, chances are he’ll find a way to turn it into something a little more fun than that. What’s doubly ironic about Jason’s imprisonment is, were it not for his well-meaning efforts to do right by Jess, he wouldn’t even be there, making Jessica’s sudden desire for Humanity Vamp an even bigger a slap in the face. Is there any man with more humanity than Jason?
Of course, Sarah isn’t the only woman taking control this week. It turns out that Alcide’s top bitch is about to make a power grab of her own – unfortunately for Alcide, that grab looks like it’s going to take the form of a very public neutering. While almost fully deserved – power does not agree with the Herveaux men – this is another example of a male hierarchy slowly being decimated by women – admittedly, they’re crazy women, but women nonetheless. While the show is busy de-balling many of the main male characters, it’s giving the female characters – particularly Pam, who rocked incredibly hard this week – a lot more to do. Even Arlene, who is as deep in grief and booze as any character we’ve seen, is still kicking ass. Given what the woman has been put through in recent years, the fact that she’s now a multimillionaire isn’t just fitting, it’s going to be fantastic.
